You are what you do

Sometimes, it isn’t as easy to do something. It is easier to complain about other people doing it wrong. It’s easier to distract yourself with all the other things you could be doing- cleaning, reading, keeping up with the internet. Or, you could let yourself fall victim to an imagined sequence of events- when this happens, I’ll be able to do this.

My goal is to create theater. I can do theater without a website. Without tax exempt status. Without a space. Without anything really, other than actors and an audience. Perfection is a distraction, a theory. After all, someone isn’t going to like your work even when you feel it is perfect. So you can let the pursuit of perfection motivate you toward quality, or you can let it excuse your inaction. All I need to do is keep moving and trust that I am moving forward. And as long as I keep the goal in mind (theater, doing it) I can trust in physics- that I will gain momentum because I will have things to accomplish, details to flesh out, people to talk to.

Today I have: Set up an appointment to talk about touring fringe shows to Tacoma, made coffee, arranged to borrow costumes for my show in May, called my Mum, asked FB friends about potential space sharing partners, answered my e-mail, FB and phone messages, and read some chapters in a book about the importance of craftsmanship.

Today I have not: finished the show poster, taken the dog for a walk, gone to the bank, unpacked from NE, done laundry or other housecleaning, exercised.

When you look at it like that, I've done some useful things and will yet do some more useful things.
